Intake & Diversion Services
The Intake-Diversion Department serves as the first point of contact for all cases referred to the Richland County Juvenile Court, receiving initial complaints and referrals from law enforcement agencies, the prosecutor’s office, and parents. Following a thorough review of charges, reports, and/or interviews with parents, the department determines the most appropriate course of action for each case.
In making these decisions, Intake considers factors such as the nature and severity of the offense, any physical or emotional harm to victims, and the youth’s previous involvement with the Court. Based on this assessment, cases may be directed toward diversion options, such as referrals to community agencies, issuance of a warning letter, or an informal conference. More serious matters may result in the filing of an official complaint with the Court.
The department relies on evidence-based interventions to guide its work, including the Front-End Diversion Initiative and Motivational Interviewing, both designed to address the underlying needs of youth and families while promoting accountability and positive outcomes. Through these strategies, Intake & Diversion aims to reduce recidivism, support youth development, and connect families with the resources they need for lasting success.
